It dominates Drăgan Square and tells the story of the Greek Catholic diocese founded here in 1853.
About the place
The cathedral was built between 1843 and 1854 to plans by architect L. Oettinger. The Eparchy of Lugoj was created in 1853, and its first bishop, Alexandru Dobra, received the building in 1854.
From 1948 to 1990 the church was used by the Orthodox Church and it returned to the Greek Catholics on 21 January 1990. The square in front is the liveliest in town.
